British Airways GDPR fine and group action were avoidable

The mammoth British Airways GDPR fine and the group action for compensation we’re on the Steering Committee for were totally avoidable, meaning the airline could have saved themselves a fortune.

Research from HackerOne indicated that a simple Bug Bounty that could have cost less than £10,000.00 may have identified the vulnerabilities that led to the successful 2018 cyber-attack incidents. In fact, such a bounty could also have stopped the Carphone Warehouse, Ticketmaster and TalkTalk hacks as well, it’s understood.

The fact that this was avoidable can help the prospects of succeeding with the BA Group Action, although it’s important to know the difference between the fines and the compensation for victims.

Update in the TalkTalk data breach action

There has been a key update in the TalkTalk data breach scandal from 2015, as the information for thousands more victims affected in the scandal has been found online.

An additional 4,545 customers are understood to have been affected after their information was discovered online. This is in addition to the over 155,000 that were found to have been affected years ago.

Police Federation of England and Wales data breach help

We’ve taken cases on with our No Win, No Fee policy for victims of the recent Police Federation of England and Wales data breach incidents.

The cyber attacks that hit the PFEW took place in March 2019; the first on 9th, and the second on the 21st. Neither were thought to have been specifically targeting PFEW and are understood to have been part of a wider malware incident.

PFEW has confirmed that they’re unable to rule out that information has been exposed. As they’re unable to rule it out, we can take claims for data breach compensation forward for anyone suffering distress as a result of the incident. There could be as many as 120,000 police employees that have been hit by the breaches.

Action taken in wake of Marriott cyber attack

Action has been taken in the wake of the massive Marriott cyber attack that was revealed last year, both here in the U.K. and in the U.S.

In the U.K., victims may be entitled to make a claim for data breach compensation if you were one of the 500 million people affected. If you’re a resident in England or Wales, we can represent you for the case. A claim is separate to any enforcement action and fines that may be issue by the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office). The 500px data breach incident

News of the monumental 500px data breach incident has hit the media recently. It may have affected all of their users – that’s 15 million people worldwide.

It’s understood that an ‘unauthorised party’ gained access to their systems on 5th July 2018. However, engineers only discovered the security issue and the subsequent breach last month. That means a period of around six months where victims of the 500px data breach have been left vulnerable to further attacks.

It’s thought that all 15 million of their users are affected by the incident. The organisation has triggered password resets as a precaution. Victims will need to keep an eye on their online accounts and activity, as well as being wary of phishing scams.

Collection #1 incident a stark wake-up call

The leak of hundreds of millions of email addresses and passwords – known as Collection #1 – is a stark and alarming wake-up call.

The 87gb file that was published contained data that’s said to have been gleaned from a number of different hacks and attacks over several years. It serves as a monumental wake-up call for those who are guilty of reusing the same login credentials across different platforms, and for those who haven’t changed their passwords for years and / or use rubbish passwords.

Criminals have the technology to use data from these hacks to systematically target accounts with very little effort. People are in imminent danger.

Are you a victim of the Marriott data breach?

If you’re a victim of the monumental Marriott data breach, we may be able to help you claim compensation.

The Marriott data breach has to be the super breach of 2018. Some 500 million customers whose data was on the Starwood reservations database has been compromised. The breach period appears to have been from 2014 up until 10th September 2018. That’s a four-year exposure period!

Marriott International acquired the Starwood chain in 2016. As far as we’re aware, the affected customers were all on a separate Starwood reservations database.

Legal claims launched as British Airways data breach hits 380,000

Legal claims have been launched as the British Airways data breach revealed last week has hit some 380,000 customers.

Card numbers, expiry dates and security codes (CVV) have been exposed in the attack, together with the personal details of the victims.

This is an incredibly serious data breach that will likely result in a significant fine that could amount to £500m for breaches of the new GDPR that came into force in May 2018. Victims of the British Airways data breach can be eligible to launch a legal case for any financial loss, distress and inconvenience caused with us as well.
