Unless you’ve not been paying attention to recent news, there has been a huge Dixons Carphone data breach.
The data breach is thought to have affected almost six million people’s data: that’s the data for some 5.9 million payment (debit and credit) cards being exposed, as well as 1.2 million personal data records being exposed as well.
Of the millions of credit and debit card details exposed, more than 100,000 apparently did not have chip-and-pin protection, leaving them in a potentially more vulnerable position of fraud.
The Dixons Carphone data breach is, so far, this year’s “mega breach” after last year’s Equifax one that was the big news of 2017. Hackers reportedly attacked the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores, leading to the monumental information being exposed and leaked.
As is often the case after a monumental data breach, Dixons Carphone expect to lose money, and has already taken a hit in terms of share value.
Luckily for them, the Dixons Carphone data breach apparently took place almost a year ago, and it remains unknown as to why it’s taken almost a year for the data breach to hit the news.
Although Dixons Carphone will no doubt face huge criticism for the lapse of time it has taken for the data breach to be revealed – on top of the fact it has happened in the first place – they’re set to likely dodge a fine that could have amounted to almost £20m in light of the new GDPR powers afforded to the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office).
We’re advising victims of the Dixons Carphone data breach, so if you have been affected, we may be able to help you.
We will be further investigating the data breach, and given that it has taken almost a year for the news of it to break, victims’ data may have been exposed for a worryingly long time.
